With roots in southern Louisiana, I’m drawn to the live oaks and natural landscape of this island.  Only accessible by people ferry, my wife and I take off on a three-night backpacking trip. The island, appearing to be left in time, hosted the Carnegie’s private winter retreat in the 1800’s.  Three nights on the trail allows you to see the ruins and plantations left behind while meeting the feral horses now roaming free.
